Mr. Russell

I love a good sports debate more then anything in the world. Lebron James has created tons of hoopla regarding a league wide retirement of Michael Jordan’s number 23.  With all due respect to Michael Jordan, but he would not be the most deserving of such a honor.  While his impact as arguably the greatest player of all time has done a great deal for the league as a whole, but it has not been the greatest.  If any player should be considered for this honor it should be Bill Russell.

Defensive Anchor

Bill Russell is the greatest winner in North American sports history.  We are talking about an NCAA Champion, Olympic Champion, not to mention a NBA Champion.  He was the anchor of the great Celtic Dynasty that won 11 championship in 13 years.  Just based off winning he should be considered.

11 Championships

Russell was also the first Black Coach in NBA history.  He also was the first black coach to win a NBA Championship.  Russell was also an advocate for racial injustice during the civil rights era.  Can you say the same for Mr. Jordan, whom only outside activities of basketball consisted of selling sneakers, golf and gambling.

MVP of MVPs

The NBA has left this matter to be resolved on a team by team basis.  A fair concept in my opinion.  An honor like this should really mean something.  There was a league before Michael Jordan.  Bill Russell stands alone as the greatest of all time.  Not only for his achievements on the court, but also for his achievements as a person.

Finals MVP in His Honor
